— What happens to a person’s identity after displacement from their homeland?
— To what extent is an artist dependent on the area known as a home country?
— What if one’s own home territory turns into an exile?
— How to define the relationships between a country’s political identity and the living situation of individuals?
“To reduce them to a faceless mass, to deprive them of their stories is a crime against humanity and history,” wrote Aleksandar Hemon, an American writer of Bosnian descent, in an essay on his own experience of exile. The interspace, which arises after escaping or leaving the homeland, constitutes a strange, elusive bridge – a space of transition and new awareness, which hides many layers of meaning and experience. What follows is either a personal spectacle without an audience, or the reduction of one’s reality to graphs and statistics.
In our era of highly accessible opportunities abroad, cross-border communion and youth exodus, but also political turbulence in the European region, the weakening of national democracies and climate migration, the issue of exile has become increasingly urgent. At the end of 2021, a new refugee crisis broke out on the Belarus-Polish border. Individual human lives have been exploited as a part of hybrid tactics in the militarized border area. The Polish government responded to the crisis by sending troops and building a barbed wire fence across the border. The authorities continue to prevent humanitarian and medical aid organizations from entering the zone where groups of migrants survive in freezing winter, finding no refuge in any territory: not even in the supposedly „open“ and welcoming Europe.
The crisis unleashed by Alexander Lukashenko highlights the acute fragility of populations reduced to „bare life“ under the force of geopolitical conflicts (bare life is a term introduced by Giorgi Agamben which refers to a process of reducing one’s life to the biological matter by neglecting the dimension of the quality of life and individual rights). This practice is not limited to the border areas but also characterizes structural violence in one’s home territory (for example, the oppression of the Palestinian population under the Israeli apartheid).
In this open call, we are looking for two artists who relate to the topic of exile through their work and/or personal history. „Wayward Exiles“exhibition will be a part of our thematic cycle „Work – Conflict – the Sacred“. Applicants are encouraged to submit several pieces of various media (surface, object, photography, digital art, etc.). The jury and the curator will decide on the final ratio of individual artworks submitted by the selected pair of artists. The head of the jury and the curator of the Wayward Exiles exhibition is Kvet Nguyen, a renowned Slovak-Vietnamese visual artist who explores the topics of difference and identity in her artistic work and activism.
We are not excluding any specific location of origin or a particular type of „escape“ from one country to another. Instead, we are interested in the broader political or intimate experience and ramifications of the exile condition and its conceptualization in art. Artists of any origin, ethnicity and citizenship are invited to submit their projects in the open call. We particularly encourage and welcome submissions from artists who have lived or currently live in countries with endangered democratic principles and civic freedoms.
Your submissions may address (not only) the following issues:
- disruption of family roots and alternative homes
- civil rights and limited freedoms
- queer experience of exile
- search for safety and shelter
- precarious jobs and unequal opportunities in the country of exile
- nomadic experience and identity
- apartheid
Selected artists will have the opportunity to participate in this project under a pseudonym. Personal participation is not required. Should you have any issues with sending non-digital works (due to limited access to the postal services or other concerns), we offer an alternative in the form of replica production.
We offer:
- € 300 fee per person
- production costs
- insured transport of the artwork
- reimbursement of travel expenses up to € 150 per person
- accomodation for 3 nights per person
- technical support in Tabačka Gallery
- collaboration with renowned Vietnamese-Slovak visual artist Kvet Nguyen, the curator of the exhibition
- opportunity to participate in the accompanying program of the exhibition

- the title of the submitted project

The open call committee will select two winning projects whose authors will be contacted with an offer to participate in the exhibition.

WAYWARD EXILES: OTVORENÁ VÝZVA GALÉRIE TABAČKA PRE UMELKYNE A UMELCOV V EXILE
— Kým sa stávame po vysídlení z vlasti?
— Do akej miery je umelec či umelkyňa závislá na území označovanom ako domov?
— Čo ak domov a exil prestanú byť protikladmi a stanú sa tým istým miestom?
— A aké sú vzťahy medzi politickou identitou krajiny a životnou situáciou jednotlivcov?
„To reduce them to a faceless mass, to deprive them of their stories is a crime against humanity and history,“ napísal Aleksandar Hemon, americký spisovateľ bosnianskeho pôvodu, v eseji o vlastnom prežívaní exilu. Medzipriestor, ktorý vzniká po úteku či odchode z domoviny, je až neuchopiteľným mostom – priestorom tranzície aj uvedomenia, ktoré ukrýva mnoho vrstiev významov a prežívania. To, čo nasleduje, je buď osobný spektákel bez obecenstva alebo udalosť plošne zjednodušená do grafov a štatistík.
V ére vysokej dostupnosti príležitostí v zahraničí, cezhraničného pendlerstva a exodu mládeže za štúdiom, ale aj politických turbulencií v európskom regióne, oslabovania národných demokracií a klimatickej migrácie sa téma exilu stáva čoraz naliehavejšou. Na konci roka 2021 naplno prepukla nová utečenecká kríza na bielorusko-poľských hraniciach. Jednotlivé ľudské životy boli zneužité ako súčasť hybridných taktík v militarizovanom pohraničnom území. Poľská vláda na krízovú situáciu zareagovala stavaním ostnatého plota a vyslaním vojska. Poľské úrady bránia organizáciám humanitárnej a lekárskej pomoci dostať sa do zóny, kde sa v mrazoch zdržiavajú skupiny migrujúcich, ktorí nenachádzajú útočisko na žiadnom území: ani v tom „otvorenom“ európskom.
Kríza vyvolaná Alexandrom Lukašenkom ukazuje na akútnu krehkosť populácií, ktorých jednotlivci sú pôsobením geopolitických konfliktov zredukovaní na „holý život“ (bare life – termín Giorgia Agambena označujúci zúženie života na jeho biologickú skutočnosť, bez rozmeru kvality žitia a ľudských práv). Tento postup sa neobmedzuje len na pohraničné zóny, ale charakterizuje aj štrukturálne násilie na domovskom území (napríklad útlak palestínskej populácie v izraelskom apartheide).
V otvorenej výzve Galérie Tabačka hľadáme dvoch umelcov či umelkyne, ktorí*é sa svojim pôsobením alebo osobnou históriou vzťahujú k téme exilu. „Wayward Exiles“ bude predstavovať tematickú výstavu v rámci nášho ročného cyklu „Práca – Konflikt – Sakrálno“. Uchádzači a uchádzačky majú možnosť prihlásiť viacero diel rôzneho druhu (plošné, objektové, fotografia, digitálne umenie atď.). Výsledný výber a pomer diel v rámci vybranej dvojice bude predmetom výberu komisie a kurátorky. Garantkou výzvy a kurátorkou výstavy Wayward Exiles je Kvet Nguyen, renomovaná slovensko-vietnamská vizuálna umelkyňa, ktorá rozoberá témy inakosti a identity vo svojej umeleckej tvorbe a rôznych aktivitách vo verejnom živote.
Nezameriavame sa na špecifickú lokalitu pôvodu či konkrétny typ „úteku“ z jednej krajiny do inej. Zaujíma nás skôr politická alebo intímna skúsenosť exilovej situácie v širokom zmysle a jej prerozprávanie v umení. Výzva je otvorená umelcom a umelkyniam bez ohľadu na pôvod, národnosť a občianstvo. Špeciálne chceme dať priestor skúsenosti z krajín, v ktorých sú ohrozené demokratické princípy a garancia ľudských práv.
Témy predložených diel môžu predstavovať (ale nemusia sa obmedzovať na):
- pretrhanie koreňov a alternatívne domovy
- občianske práva a obmedzené slobody
- queer skúsenosť exilu
- hľadanie bezpečia a úkrytu
- prekariát a nerovné príležitosti v exilovej krajine
- nomádska skúsenosť a identita
- apartheid
Vybraní umelci a umelkyne majú možnosť zúčastniť sa projektu pod pseudonymom a bez osobnej účasti. V prípade problémov s odoslaním ne-digitálnych diel ponúkame alternatívu vo forme výroby replík.

Komisia otvorenej výzvy vyberie z prihlášok dva projekty, ktorým ponúkne účasť na výstave.
